For those you don't live in my neck of the woods - a sure sign of spring is the ice going off the lake. This of course requires warmer temps hopefully without wind. Lots of ice had melted and so much more water was showing with a thin layer of ice out in the middle of the lake. Well wouldn't ya know the wind kicked up one day and when this happens it moves the ice onto shore and nothing and I mean nothing stops it
that looks like snow but it's pure ice that was pushed onto shore. Those 2 wooden posts there are the electrical connections we use for our sprinkler system and boat lifts - those are pushed down further than when I took this picture. If you look at our neighbors dock you can see it's a bit twisted on the one end. Ice was still probably 4 to 5 inches thick at this point - here's going down the other side of the beach
Now 2 days later which brought us to yesterday - the wind had shifted and again moved the ice that was left in the middle of the lake down the beach from us. I wish I had taken my camera on our walk yesterday because it was worse than what we had - probably a good 5 ft high ice walls on the beach. But what happened we think is that it took the nesting area for several area geese and ducks out - covering their nests and eggs with ice. This has confused the geese because they've been camping out in front of our place on a floating piece of ice or floating in the open water - those dots in the background are more ducks and geese (hard to get a good shot). We think they just don't know what to do - so they float
Last night we figured we had about 30 of them in our area. This is their favorite spot that they nest in every spring and since we've been here starting with the cabin we've never seen this happen. So I think they are just hanging around our spot looking over at their nesting spot waiting for the ice to thaw and check out the eggs. Now I'm not a fan of those geese and the business that they leave behind - smelly and gross - but I did hate to think that their eggs are probably destroyed. Some things are just so out of our control.
Not much else new going on around here. Tomorrow is woolies and I look forward to sharing some show and tell.
Until Next Time
Anyone would be confused with that sort of thing happening.....the ice would have a bit of force behind it I guess. Are you looking forward to Spring????? We have been having warm dry weather for Autumn so far....low to mid 20'sC ....nice living weather.

thats so interesting, never really thought about the ice and what happens to it. So sad about the geese and duck eggs though.
Hope there wasn't major damage done to your property and the neighbors, all the docks will they have to be replaced?

Wow! This is what I love about blogs -- you learn so much about what is going on in other parts of the world -- things that you would never thing of. So sad for the birds. I wonder if they'll be able to make new nests? Our spring is SO late here this year -- our trees are normally all leafed out by now -- the leaves are just barely starting to peek out. Hopefully this means a nice, cool summer LOL! Thanks for the great education Ms. Farmhouse!

I've never seen anything like that before. Those poor birds don't know what's happening to them. I hope they can recover by building new nests. We are getting a late spring as well, it's been soooo cold, all the flowers are very late. When will it warm up???
